Prague–14 May

The train trip from Budapest to Prague took just under 7 hours .. was comfortable enough, and quite scenic.  Came through some very dense forest, and lots of open farmland.  First impressions bad:  I had to pay exorbitant commission to get some Czech money at station, then was ripped off by taxi drivers all demanding excessive fixed price fares (3 times the meter rate it turned out).

Very nice apartment, leafy area though still very close central city.  Have a cosy pub right opposite at which I have had dinner both nights.  Food relatively inexpensive: tonight I paid 470 czk (about $23) for a 400gm steak chips and salad, 1/2 litre beer, glass red wine, apple strudel and cream and mug of tea.  A bit noisy (card players) and smoky (no smoke bans anywhere here), but I enjoy its atmosphere.

Yesterday I just did a street wander around the local area. Today I headed out and bought a 3 days  public transport pass, and took subway into old city.  Deepest escalators ever seen to get down:  ride takes just over 2 minutes!  Can get quite giddy looking down.  Found the hop on-hop off bus office and bought a ticket.  The tour started with an informative 15 minute walk through the old city with quite good historical commentary.  Then I just rode the 80 minute circuit to get a feel for the places I will return to to explore at depth.  No rain, although threatening.  But got quite chilly.

The architectural styles here are quite varied:  not as much ugly Soviet stuff as I expected.  The exception is the city stadium:  seats 240,000 but is too big for football games (can’t see the ball they reckon!)  Can fit 9 soccer pitches in the middle.  Sparta, the local team trains there, but plays at smaller field.  They have pop concerts there. Both in Budapest and here lots of billboards for concerts:  Duran Duran, Bryan Adams, Julio Iglesias, and Police all featuring:  so obviously there is an international circuit.  Ice Hockey is the national sport.  World Championship finals on at moment:  Czech Republic got beaten last night: like  a national disaster.

Hope tomorrow is a a bit warmer:  forecast is for sunny.  Will try to work out the tram system for getting around as I know they go past most of the major historical buildings.

Some pics as usual here.

Taxi drivers are the same the world over, aren't they. There's a website called www.ihatetaxis.com about the cheapest ways to get from airport to hotel. Hope you love Prague. We found it just a treat around every corner. Take good care.

I am loving what I can see of Prague but I would never have thought to put it on an itinerary for us. Debbie I think The 'ihate taxis' website may require you to be a little less encumbered than Ron. Have you seen the size of his suitcase???
