An uneventful 2 hour flight landed me mid-afternoon in Townsville. Much warmer than when I left Brisbane. Picked up my wheels for the next two weeks: a Mitsubishi Outlander -- a very comfortable ride.
The road west from Townsville is flat as it heads towards the Dividing Range... Very dry, but the cattle I saw grazing seemed in pretty good shape. An easy drive, mostly at 110 kph, and road condition good. After 70 km there is a gradual climb up to the tablelands. Another 50km brings one into Charters Towers. I booked into the motel, took local advice and went to the Sovereign Tavern for dinner, then back to motel for an early night.
