OAKEY: 135km by road west of Brisbane.
An easy run in the Nissan XTrail that I have hired from Europcar: comfortable to ride in and nice to handle. But the trip took 2.5 hours because of a crash near Gailes, and lots of roadwork.
Driving west from Toowoomba, the Darling Downs are picture perfect at this time of year. Neatly plowed fields mixed with grazing paddocks. Beautiful vistas.
A neat little town on a side road off the main Warrego Highway; population 4500. Gets its name from oaks along the nearby creek. Just one main street, with 3 pubs, a tavern and the local RSL. Having booked into my motel, I favoured the RSL for dinner. Having to stand for the Last Post halfway through my steak was a new experience! I then walked the main street window shopping, just to get a feel for the place. Very quiet at night.
Tomorrow I will check out the Army Aviation Museum before heading on to Dalby and Chinchilla.
